Fluid-structure interaction in axisymmetric stenosed arteries: A numerical study assessing the influence of the plaque and the blood properties

چکیده
The fracture of vulnerable carotid plaques is the major cause of cerebrovascular thromboembolic events such as strokes and ischemic attacks. To prevent this issue, carotid endarterectomy is the closely treatment for pathological plaques. The vulnerability is believed to be related to mechanical forces, vessel surface condition, cell activities and chemical environment. Several authors developped computational model to perform mechanical analysis for atherosclerotic plaques and identify critical mechanical descriptors as stresses or strains related to plaque fracture [1].

In the present study, the nonlinear model of non-Newtonian blood flow in cosine-shape stenosed elastic artery is numerically examined. The model is carried out for axisymmetric, two-dimensional and fully developed blood flow. The vessel wall is assumed to be have time-dependent radius that is important factor for study of blood flow. The cosine-shape stenosis convert to rigid artery by using a ...

Background: The interaction between the blood and the vessel wall is of great clinical interest in studying cardiovascular diseases, the major causes of death in developed countries. Objective: To understand the effects of incorporating fluid-structure interaction into the simulation of blood flow through an anatomically realistic model of abdominal aorta and renal arteries reconstructed from CT...
متن کاملA numerical parametric study of the mechanical action of pulsatile blood flow onto axisymmetric stenosed arteries.
In the present paper, a fluid-structure interaction model is developed, questioning how the mechanical action of the blood onto an atheromatous plaque is affected by the length and the severity of the stenosis. An axisymmetric model is considered. The fluid is assumed Newtonian. The plaque is modelled as a heterogeneous hyperelastic anisotropic solid composed of the arterial wall, the lipid cor...
متن کاملA Numerical Analysis for the Effect of Slip Velocity and Stenosis Shape on Non-Newtonian Flow of Blood (TECHNICAL NOTE)
The aim of this paper is to study the effect of slip velocity and shape of stenosis on non-Newtonian flow of blood through a stenosed arterial segment. Blood is modeled as Bingham-Plastic fluid in a uniform circular tube with a radially non-symmetric stenosis. The problem is investigated by a joint effort of analytical and numerical techniques. The influence of stenosis shape parameter, slip ve...
